Engine rebuilds & reconditioning, done right. We come to your home, office, or roadside across the greater Durban area.
Get A Free QuoteAn engine overhaul means rebuilding your engine back to factory tolerances rather than simply replacing it. At Mobile Mechanic Durban we assess, strip, recondition and reassemble petrol and diesel engines — we come to you for the assessment and removal, with the precision machining (boring, skimming, crank grinding) handled at a trusted engineering shop before we rebuild and refit. It is skilled, methodical work, and we are upfront about whether a rebuild is the right call for your car or whether a good used or reconditioned engine makes more sense.
Every overhaul starts with a proper diagnosis — a compression and leak-down test to confirm where the engine has lost its seal before we commit to a strip-down. If you are not yet sure the engine is the problem, our on-site diagnostic service can rule out cheaper causes first. A "top overhaul" covers the cylinder head, valves, rings and gaskets; a "full overhaul" goes deeper, replacing main and big-end bearings, honing or reboring the cylinders, grinding the crankshaft, and renewing the oil pump, water pump and timing components.
Common signs an engine needs reconditioning include blue-grey exhaust smoke with steadily dropping oil, white smoke and coolant loss with overheating (a head-gasket or warped head), heavy power loss, or a deep knocking noise from the bottom of the engine that points to worn bearings. Catching these early often means a smaller, cheaper job — ignoring them usually means a full rebuild.
We work on all the popular South African engines, from Toyota Hilux and Fortuner 3.0 D4D diesels (where failed injector seats can contaminate the oil and starve the bottom end) to VW Polo and Golf TSI petrols, Ford Ranger TDCi, and Hyundai and Nissan units. High mileage, overheating and skipped oil changes are the usual culprits, and Durban's heat and stop-start traffic put extra strain on a tired cooling system, so keeping up with regular servicing is the cheapest way to avoid ever needing this job.
Because an overhaul is a major investment, we give you an honest, written assessment first. As a rule of thumb it rarely makes sense to spend more than half your car's resale value on engine work — and we will tell you if a replacement engine or a thorough major service is the smarter spend. Every full rebuild we carry out is done to spec and backed by a workmanship warranty.
Top overhaul (4-cyl petrol): R15,000–R25,000 | Full overhaul (4-cyl petrol): R35,000–R50,000 | Diesel bakkie engines: R40,000–R60,000 | 6-cylinder: R50,000–R75,000. Final price depends on machining, parts and engine condition — every job is quoted in writing after inspection.
All prices are estimates. We provide a firm quote after inspecting your vehicle. No hidden fees — you approve the price before we start.
For an older, lower-value car a good used or reconditioned engine is often cheaper and faster than a full rebuild. For a newer or higher-value vehicle, an overhaul keeps your original matched engine and comes with a warranty. We give you both costings so you can decide — generally it is not worth spending more than 50–60% of the car’s value on engine work.
A top overhaul can take a few days. A full strip-down usually takes one to two weeks, because the block, head and crankshaft go out to an engineering shop for boring, skimming and grinding, and that machining turnaround is the part outside our direct control.
Yes. Every full overhaul we complete is backed by a workmanship warranty, provided you do the run-in service and keep to the service intervals afterwards. We put the warranty terms in writing on your quote so there are no surprises.
